Rallye Targa Florio History

The WRC decided for 2012 to change the base for the Italian round once again. We lost classic San Remo for the gravel round Sardinia, and 7 years later the event was moved to another island on gravel, Sizilia.

In another strange twist once again, after the season started the WRC decided to U-turn the U-turn and not do the new rally after all but stay on Sardegna. In yet another strange twist the IRC lost the Mecsek Rally in Hungary on financial grounds (but it wasn't a very good rally in the first place) and decided to replace it with Sizilia. However then the IRC is not an amateur series and likes rally heritage, which is why I changed this event and its description on our web site: Rather than doing an all new event without history and that nobody knows, as the WRC had planned, the IRC remembered the famous Targa Florio road care turn rally, an asphalt event... The WRC's event on Sizilia would have been gravel. The Targa Florio indeed was invented as a road race (therefore the name Targa) by the rally driver Vincenzo Florio, all the way back in 1906, but since 1978 it is entirely on closed roads rally style event. And well, the IRC runs that, yet another classic to look forward to.
